Preston got back to winning ways on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic – and were spared from being embarrassed by Andre Green.
North End fell a goal down early on, as Green struck from close range on his return to Deepdale. The Aston Villa loanee spent the first half of the season at Preston, but was sent packing in January having barely played.
Green was keen to make an impact on his return to Preston, and did just that with a nicely-taken goal. North End did eventually get back into the game through Josh Harrop, before Patrick Bauer scored the winner – also against his former club.
Bauer refused to celebrate as he powered a header past the Addicks, but the same can’t be said of winger Green after his goal.
Green ran away to celebrate in front of the Preston fans, sliding on his knees in a celebration that irked a few. We’re not exactly sure why, as Green was more than entitled to celebrate in that way.
His time at Deepdale was hugely frustrating, and coming back to score his first Charlton goal was no doubt a huge moment for Green. His celebrating wasn’t mocking Preston, it wasn’t disrespectful, it was just a player celebrating an important goal passionately.
Still, Green received criticism on Twitter, and felt he had to take to Twitter to defend himself. Green highlighted that his celebration wasn’t aimed towards North End, just for his own personal reasons.
Green added that he respects everyone at Deepdale and wished us luck for the rest of the season, so hopefully anybody still annoyed by the celebration has some kind of explanation.
Thank you!!🙏🏼 My celebration today wasn’t aimed towards @pnefc fans but for my own personal reasons. Nothing but respect for everyone sitting in the stands at deepdale. Good luck for the season👍🏾 https://t.co/Rf57uNLhwi
