Preston completed their third signing of the summer on Thursday, taking Aston Villa winger Andre Green on loan.
After signing Patrick Bauer and David Nugent, North End’s summer went a little quiet. Even after losing star winger Callum Robinson to Sheffield United, business didn’t really pick up.
On Thursday though, Alex Neil swooped for Robinson’s replacement, signing Green; a right-footed left winger who came up through the Villa ranks before heading to Deepdale. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
Green featured for Villa last season in their promotion-winning campaign, and also impressed out on loan at Portsmouth. The 21-year-old has been backed for a bright future but desperately needs playing time.
With Anwar El Ghazi signed permanently and deals done for Jota and Trezeguet, that wasn’t going to happen at Villa this season. Dean Smith has now made the sensible decision to send Green out on loan, with game time likely at North End.
Villa may be hoping that Green develops in the same way Robinson did, but his long-term future is unclear. There may even be a chance that Green – like Robinson – is playing for a permanent move away.
Villa fans have subsequently taken to Twitter to react to the move, with many feeling it’s ‘amazing’ for Green to be playing in such a good side. Others think he improved last season and could rip the Championship apart if he improves his end product.
Some even think Green may have played his final game for Villa, and hope North End sign him permanently. They just feel Green isn’t of Villa’s level now they’re back in the top flight, and a permanent move to Deepdale could be perfect for him – just as it was for Robinson three years ago.
Was looking forward to seeing Green in the Prem. He improved loads towards end of season. Thought he could've played a part this season. https://t.co/CA5lq5v4S4

Ah. A shame, really, but I guess his game time was going to be restricted at #avfc this season. Hope he gets regular football, shows what he can do – Preston's a good club to be at. Good luck Andre. 👊 https://t.co/05ZQ04XwN8

Really think this move will be the making of Andre Green, shown some promising football and I know there is much more to come from him 👍

Really like Preston as a club, seem to be very well run and good at developing players. Hopefully this move helps Green push on and also helps get Preston into the playoffs 👍 #avfc https://t.co/WYeqAhtvg1

Well that could be the last time we see Andre Green in a Villa shirt – Best of luck Andre #AVFC

Green really needs to set the Championship alight this season to prive his worth to Villa. If he doesn’t then his days at Villa Park will surely be over.
I must be honest though, I have my doubts but would loved to be proved wrong. #avfc

Preston's are good at developing young players and giving them playing time. Great move for him

The right decision. Nothing against the lad but he isn't up to the level we are now. File under the same as Daniel Johnson.

Hopefully with a clause where they have yo buy him, no where near good enough for the villa.

I hope he goes permanent…
It's his level. He's a great lad and I've enjoyed watching him develop but he'll do a good job for Preston and sadly, if he stayed in the PL, he wouldn't

Amazing move for him!
