With Ben Pearson moving on in the near future, now is the time for Preston’s next set of midfield stars to really emerge.

Two January signings are key to that; loanee Jayson Molumby will help fill in the gap until the summer, and he starred in the 1-0 win over Birmingham City last night.

Ben Whiteman has impressed in his two games since arriving from Doncaster Rovers, and looks set to be part of Preston’s midfield for years to come.

The duo were joined in midfield by Ryan Ledson at Birmingham, with the former Everton man looking to get back on track.

Ledson has mostly starred since lockdown, but he maybe hasn’t been quite at his best in recent weeks, with now the time to step up with Pearson set for the exit.

The 23-year-old turned in a superb performance from a defensive perspective, with his stats summing up an all-action display in front of the back four.

Ledson racked up five interceptions, three successful tackles, two clearances and blocked two shots, providing a battling display to aid his defence.

Alex Neil will no doubt be looking for better passing from Ledson; his 42% pass accuracy was somewhat disappointing, though is sometimes a risk you take with Ledson’s risky and progressive passing.

Ledson will now hope to feature prominently with Whiteman and Molumby, proving that he can still play a key role despite two midfield signings this month.
