Preston need a host of signings before Thursday’s transfer deadline, and a new left back is imperative.

Andrew Hughes fared well last season, but there is room for competition. Josh Earl has been loaned out to Bolton Wanderers, but is now out for three months with an ankle injury.

Loaning Earl out seemingly hinted at a new left back coming in, but top target Max Lowe won’t be arriving. The LEP claim that a bid for Lowe was rejected last week, and North End are unlikely to return.

That leaves North End looking for other options, with less than 48 hours to go until the transfer deadline. What’s interesting is that a former Preston favourite may be available in that position.

Pete O’Rourke reported last week that Cardiff are ready to make Greg Cunningham available, and has today reiterated that a host of clubs are keen on the 28-year-old.

Cunningham really became a star at North End, impressing in three seasons with the club. A bargain signing from Bristol City in 2015, Cunningham became Mr Consistency at Deepdale, and deserved his Premier League move last summer.

Sadly, the Irishman hasn’t featured as much as he’d have liked at Cardiff. He’s now seemingly on the move, and having been a favourite of Alex Neil in the 2017-18, a move back to Deepdale would make some sense.

Wages would be an issue, as would a host of other interested clubs. However, having heard Cunningham is available, fans are taking to Twitter to urge Preston to make the move.

Some believe that Cunningham would be an upgrade on Hughes at left back, and are begging North End to bring him back to the club, praying that Cunningham returns just a year since leaving.
