Connor Wickham may be in his final days at Preston, can leave North End for free next week

Preston striker Connor Wickham remains on the sidelines – and may now be in his final week as a North End player.

With Preston seeking a striker earlier this season, Wickham was taken on trial.

A free agent after leaving Crystal Palace over the summer, Wickham joined North End for training in search of a contract.

Preston gave Wickham a deal in September after impressing in training. After an encouraging 25-minute cameo against West Bromwich Albion, Preston fans had hope.

Sadly for Wickham, that hope came crashing down just days later. Minutes into his first Preston start against Cheltenham Town, Wickham picked up a hamstring injury.

Wickham hasn’t played since, and decision time is now approaching for Preston.

Wickham’s contract runs until January 13th, meaning we’re now inside the final week of the striker’s deal.

New boss Ryan Lowe must make the call; do Preston let Wickham go or extend his deal and hope the injuries stay away?

At the moment, we would have to guess that Wickham moves on.

Preston aren’t in a position to be paying wages to players who aren’t playing, and whilst Wickham isn’t one of the club’s highest earners, it’s cash and a squad space being taken up.

That’s nothing against Wickham; we would love nothing more than him to bounce back from his injury hell and bang the goals in for Preston.

At the moment though, it’s hard to see that happening, and Wickham could be on his way out of Preston a week today.
