Matthew Olosunde starts in another new position for Preston as future under Lowe looks uncertain

Preston defender Matthew Olosunde is fighting for his North End future – and there seems to be an ongoing experiment over his position.

North End swooped to sign Olosunde on a free transfer last summer, with his Rotherham United contract coming to an end.

An athletic right back available for free after some promising signs in the Championship, Olosunde seemed to be a very smart addition for Preston.

Sadly, Olosunde picked up an injury in his first pre-season game back in July and wasn’t able to play again until December.

After picking up another blow in that start against Blackburn Rovers, we didn’t see Olosunde again until mid-January against Swansea City.

That 54-minute display was error-strewn and shaky, but what else could you expect from a player with only 82 minutes of action before then?

The big shock came after the January window as Olosunde was omitted from Ryan Lowe’s squad for the rest of the season.

Lowe seemingly hasn’t been a big fan of Olosunde so far and felt that he could manage the rest of the season without him being available.

It already seems like a long way back for Olosunde at Preston, but there are some intriguing experiments going on in the reserves.

On Tuesday, Preston hosted Liverpool in the Lancashire Senior Cup and Olosunde actually lined up as part of a back three.

Olosunde played as a right-sided centre back with Paul Huntington in the middle and Joe Blanchard on the left.

That’s an interesting idea, with Lowe no doubt looking to see if he can make the switch to that role on a long-term basis.

Olosunde started his career as a winger before moving to wing back and full back, but he can’t have expected to be playing in midfield and at centre back.

That may be what Olosunde has to do though now, with his future at Preston less than certain under Lowe.
