Preston missed out on signing three Championship attackers; they've just combined for 75 goals

Preston’s former head of recruitment Joe Savage spoke to From The Finney last week, and gave a brilliant insight into signing and targeting players.

Savage left North End for Hearts towards the back end of 2020, having spent more than three years at Deepdale.

Savage went into some of the players Preston targeted but sadly couldn’t get over the line; unfortunately, that’s football. You sign some, you miss some.

North End did all they could to sign the players Savage mentioned, but it just wasn’t to be.

Frustratingly, three names Savage mentioned have just combined for 75 goals in the Championship this past season – here they are…

Ivan Toney – 33 goals

Savage mentioned that Preston had looked into signing Toney, though it wasn’t clear whether this was when he was at Newcastle or Peterborough. Toney smashed 33 goals for Brentford this past season, including a penalty in the playoff final against Swansea City last weekend to fire the Bees to the Premier League.

Adam Armstrong – 28 goals

The Scot noted that Preston had a bid accepted for Armstrong whilst with Newcastle United, but he picked Blackburn Rovers because he had worked with boss Tony Mowbray previously. Armstrong racked up 28 goals for Rovers this past season, including two against North End.

Jamal Lowe – 14 goals

Lowe picked a move to Swansea over Preston when leaving Wigan Athletic last summer, and there wasn’t a great deal North End could do about it. He went on to bag 14 goals for the Swans, playing most of the season as a striker despite being a winger by trade.

75 goals between the three of them is quite astonishing, especially when you factor in that Preston scored 49 goals as a team this past season.

Scott Sinclair was the only player to score more than six league goals for North End in the last campaign, and after so many unfortunate near misses, Preston will hope to find a goal-getter this summer.
