With Connor Wickham deregistered from the Preston North End squad, defender Joe Rafferty has now been given another chance.
Wickham is out injured for the foreseeable future with a hamstring injury.
The striker suffered his injury inside 10 minutes of his first start against Cheltenham Town.
Preston have now taken Wickham out of their Championship squad, and Joe Rafferty has been brought up in his place.
The right back was originally left out of the Championship squad.
Rafferty then scored against Cheltenham, later admitting that he hadn’t been happy with his lack of playing time.
Wanted by Sunderland over the summer, Rafferty now has a second chance at Deepdale.
With his contract up at the end of the season, Rafferty could still end up leaving North End in 2022.
Right now though, the former Liverpool youngster has a chance to prove his worth to North End, offering key depth at right back.
The decision comes as fears continue to rise over Matthew Olosunde’s injury status.
The summer signing from Rotherham United suffered an injury in his first appearance for North End, a draw against St Johnstone in pre-season.
Olosunde hasn’t been seen in a Preston shirt since.
North End have played two Central League games in the international break, and Olosunde wasn’t even in the squad for either game.
If Olosunde was nearing availability again, surely he would have been involved in these reserve team games to gain some sharpness.
Instead, the American is still out, and registering another right back may leave some worried about Olosunde’s situation.
