Preston North End’s Reserves were in action on Tuesday afternoon, drawing 1-1 with Walsall – but there was no Matthew Olosunde in the squad.
PNE’s Central League campaign kicked off with a game against Walsall Reserves at the Euxton training ground.
Much of the focus was on Connor Wickham, with the former Premier League striker on trial at Deepdale and looking to earn a deal.
Walsall took the lead through an unnamed trialist, before Wickham unfortunately had a penalty saved.
Brad Potts rescued a draw for a strong PNE side, with a draw seen as a little disappointing for some North End fans.
Another frustration for fans was that defender Olosunde wasn’t involved at all as the wait for his return goes on and on.
Olosunde joined PNE from Rotherham United this summer but as played just once for the club – a 45-minute appearance against St Johnstone in pre-season.
Olosunde picked up an Achilles injury in that game, and next Monday will mark two months since his injury was sustained.
Before the international break, boss Frankie McAvoy suggested that McAvoy would be back in training within a week.
We’re now two weeks on and Olosunde wasn’t even on the bench against Walsall, suggesting that he isn’t at all close to a first-team game.
We can’t wait to see Olosunde in action. The American seems like an ideal fit as a right wing back, and we saw him produce a lung-busting run to set up Rotherham’s home win against Preston last season.
The wait goes on, but there may well be an update from McAvoy at tomorrow’s press conference ahead of facing Bristol City this weekend.
