Preston collapse without Patrick Bauer once again with contract situation hovering

Preston lost 3-0 away Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon, falling apart with defender Patrick Bauer off the pitch.

North End were seeking a second straight away win having beaten Bournemouth 2-1 in midweek.

However, Preston fell flat at the City Ground as Lewis Grabban hit a brace, scoring either side of a Jack Colback volley.

Preston did start well in the opening 20 minutes and went close to a goal through Brad Potts, but everything on a Patrick Bauer injury.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

The German defender slid in on Lewis Grabban but came off worse, aggravating his old Achilles injury.

It’s unclear just how long Bauer will now be out for, but anything longer than the international break will leave Preston fans sweating.

It has been a recurring theme this season that Preston are liable to concede ridiculous goals if Bauer isn’t on the pitch.

Hull City scored cheap goals at Deepdale, as did Reading and Huddersfield Town. Bauer came into the side after that, but his absence has been felt at times.

Remember the defeat at Queens Park Rangers last month? Bauer went off injured and all hell broke loose with Preston conceding two cheap goals, including a comical winner.

Without Bauer on the pitch today, Preston allowed three cheap goals again.

That’s not to say that Bauer hasn’t been on the pitch for some errors too – both of Blackpool’s goals against us last month were cheap.

It is though noticeable that, when Bauer is off the pitch, there doesn’t seem to be a defensive leader at the back.

This again serves as a massive warning to Preston given that Bauer is out of contract at the end of the season.

The German centre back needs a new deal quickly – or these defensive capitulations could become all too familiar.
