Preston star Patrick Bauer exorcises his Bournemouth demons as North End contract decision looms

Almost a year ago, Patrick Bauer suffered a season-ending injury at Bournemouth. Today, he’s able to celebrate exorcising those demons.

Preston beat Bournemouth 3-2 at the Vitality Stadium. Bauer scored what proved to be the winner that night, converting a Daniel Johnson cross.

The German’s night had an awful turn as he ended up tearing his Achilles, keeping him out for the second half of the season.

On Wednesday night, Bauer returned to the scene of his terrible injury – and he will be delighted with how it went.

Bauer stood tall as Preston had to keep Bournemouth at bay in a 2-1 win on the South Coast.

The 29-year-old racked up eight clearances, two interceptions and one tackle. With five aerial duels won, no other player on the pitch was better in the air.

Bauer brings so much leadership to Preston’s back line. We have seen this season that North End look rudderless at the back without him.

This brings up the subject of his contract situation.

Bauer is out of contract at the end of the season. We usually don’t like new deals for players around their 30’s, but Bauer has earned it.

He has bounced from a major injury and proven to be a rock at the heart of North End’s back three.

Bauer doesn’t turn 30 until next October, so we would love to see Preston give him a two-year extension.

With Sepp van den Berg only on loan and Andrew Hughes also out of contract next summer, Bauer needs to be kept for some stability at the back.

Last night’s game summed up Bauer’s comeback, and it’s time for Preston to reward him.
