Preston have today confirmed that goalkeeper Chris Maxwell has joined League One side Charlton Athletic for the rest of the season.

The move doesn’t exactly come as a surprise. We noted weeks ago that Maxwell’s future was bleak after again losing his spot to Declan Rudd.

Maxwell picked up an injury in the warm up against Sheffield Wednesday on December 22nd, so hasn’t been in first team contention of late anyway.

Now, the Welshman has the chance to go out and play regularly, with Maxwell coming on for Jed Steer at Charlton following his Aston Villa recall.

The news of Maxwell’s move to London has left some fans confused though. What happens to our goalkeeping department now?

Simply put, Preston must have a signing in the pipeline. Surely.

Rudd has been having a poor season anyway, so upgrading on him was always a possibility this month.

Yet with Maxwell going, there is surely no way North End see Michael Crowe as a legitimate number two after his shambolic display against Doncaster on Sunday.

After three signings already this month, Maxwell’s exit surely means a fourth incoming is imminent, with a new goalkeeper the absolute top priority this month.
