In January 2019, Preston felt they had found a potential diamond in the rough when they signed Josh Ginnelly from Walsall.

Formerly of Burnley, Ginnelly had shown promise in the first half of the 2018-19 season, with Preston pouncing to bring the winger back to Lancashire.

Unfortunately, it didn’t really work out for him at Preston. Ginnelly started just one competitive game under Alex Neil, and that came in an unfamiliar left back role.

Ginnelly spent time on loan at Bristol Rovers earlier in 2020, but then moved up to Scotland to join Hearts for the season – which will take him to the end of his Preston contract.

That likely means that the 23-year-old won’t play for Preston again, but he is making a real impression up at Tynecastle.

Hearts smashed Dundee 6-2 on Friday night, and Ginnelly bagged the second goal in that demolition with a superb long-range strike.

Hearts fans have been taking to Twitter in order to praise Ginnelly, branding him a ‘wee gem’, ‘class’ and ‘fantastic’.

Others want Ginnelly to stay long-term, adding that he was ‘absolute quality’ and ‘played class once again’.
