Preston North End fell to a terrible defeat on Tuesday night, as they were thumped 3-0 by local rivals Blackburn Rovers.

Alex Neil saw his side pick up a first home win of the season on Saturday, beating Sheffield Wednesday 1-0, and was hoping to carry that into the clash with Rovers.

However, North End were timid and slow throughout, and the task only got harder when Joe Rafferty was sent off before half time.

Adam Armstrong scored from the penalty spot, and Ben Brereton added a second to take the game away from North End; at that point, it was bad enough.

Yet there was still time for it to get even worse, as Blackburn threw on former Preston talent Tyrhys Dolan, and he of course managed to score.

Dolan tapped home from close range to put the gloss on Blackburn’s win, and leave North End completely embarrassed in their own back yard.

Preston bizarrely chose to release Dolan over the summer, allowing the 18-year-old to walk away as his scholarship came to an end, and Blackburn swooped in.

Dolan is an exciting, skilful and tricky winger, so Preston fans were unhappy enough when he was let go, never mind when he started playing Championship football for a direct local rival.

His goal unsurprisingly didn’t go down well. Some were slamming North End for letting him leave, questioning just why money wasn’t found to keep him when he clearly has so much talent – and it looks like being a mistake that Preston will have to live with for some time yet.
