Preston North End teased some new contract news on Monday afternoon, before announcing Greg Cunningham had signed a new deal until 2023.
Cunningham rejoined North End in January, two and a half years after leaving the club to join Cardiff City. The left-back earned his move to the Premier League at the time, but injuries have hampered his last three years.
The return of Cunningham was welcomed by fans, and he scored a memorable goal against Blackburn Rovers in one of his first games back.
Preston fans know that Cunningham at his best is a top left back in this league. Injuries are still lingering though, and he has already missed out on a few games since his move back to Deepdale.
Keep him fit and it’s a great signing. But we don’t need another player in the physio’s room. In this case, it could mean Joe Rafferty stepping in at left back again, and we don’t want that.
Cunningham is a popular figure with Preston fans and so his new contract has been welcomed. He’s an important player to have in the dressing room, he’s a leader and he loves the club.
With key, influential players having left or about to leave in the summer, Cunningham adds a key ingredient to the squad. He’s captained the team before and may well do so again next season.
