Playoffs? Archer and Riis again? Five questions for Preston ahead of Huddersfield Town clash

Preston North End return to action on Wednesday night, hosting play-off chasing Huddersfield Town at Deepdale in front of the Sky cameras.

Preston won 1-0 away at Hull City on Saturday afternoon, meaning they have lost just once in nine league games under Ryan Lowe.

Here is a look at five questions we have ahead of the fixture as Lowe’s side prepare to play yet another midweek game…

Who starts at right wing back?

It sounds like Brad Potts will be fit to play having been taken off against Hull City.

Potts has a lot of minutes of late though, and Lowe may be tempted to make a change just to protect Potts.

Ali McCann ended Saturday’s win at right wing back, and whilst we don’t think that’s his best position, Lowe seems to like him there.

Joe Rafferty is another option there, but Matthew Olosunde won’t be considered having been left out of Preston’s Championship squad.

We would give the nod to Potts, but don’t be surprised if Lowe makes a change.

Does Daniel Johnson come back in?

Daniel Johnson was only able to be on the bench against Hull City having been on international duty with Jamaica.

The playmaker did come off the bench against Hull, but his return now leaves Lowe with a decision to make.

Ali McCann, Alan Browne and Ben Whiteman were all outstanding at Hull, but none of them can match Johnson’s creativity.

It will be hard, but we would imagine Johnson comes in for McCann to give Preston that added guile in the final third.

Can Preston finally get going at home?

Of Lowe’s four league wins as Preston boss, three have come away. Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion and Hull City have all fallen to North End’s travelling army.

At home, Lowe has only claimed one win – his first game in charge, up against Barnsley in December.

Since then, it’s been home draws for Preston; 1-1 with Birmingham, 2-2 with Sheffield United, 2-2 with Bristol City.

Lowe would no doubt love to get that second home win under his belt, with Preston fans hoping all the wins aren’t just on the road!

Archer and Riis again?

Cameron Archer’s fine displays since arriving from Aston Villa have left Lowe with a conundrum up top.

Emil Riis and Ched Evans have been impressing too, but only two can make the starting XI.

Archer scored against Hull on Saturday and Riis is always a threat to score, but Lowe has been rotating Evans and Archer in and out.

Evans does great work as an impact substitute, and that could be his role against Huddersfield – but it’s something for Lowe to think about.

Can Preston really push for the play-offs?

This feels like the night to really get some answers on this.

Preston sit seven points behind fifth-placed Huddersfield, knowing that a win can cut that gap to four.

With West Bromwich Albion, Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest all facing tough games too, Preston could finish the night one point outside the top six.

It feels absurd to even be talking about this after such a poor start to the season, but Preston can really show they mean business on Wednesday night.
