Southampton boss Russell Martin has given his verdict on Preston North End ahead of tonight’s meeting at Deepdale.

PNE are back in Championship action once again tonight, hosting Southampton as Ryan Lowe looks to get back on track.

North End have now gone five games without a win following Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Millwall.

This is the second of a home double-header for North End and Lowe would no doubt love to secure three points tonight.

Russell Martin shares PNE verdict

North End face a tough task though with Southampton dropping just two points in their last four outings.

The Saints still have plenty of Premier League quality in their squad after relegation from the Premier League.

PNE have played just one of the relegated sides so far this season and ended up losing 3-0 away at Leicester City.

Lowe will hope to fare better tonight and opposite number Russell Martin has now given his view on North End.

Martin, who quit Swansea City for a move to Southampton over the summer, has told the Daily Echo that he thinks PNE are a ‘very physical’ team.

Martin added that PNE have ‘good athleticism’ and are very organised defensively, whilst noting a more direct style with a ‘tough challenge’ expected.

“They are a very physical team. They have good athleticism, they are really organised out of possession, in possession they will get it forward quicker than Hull did. They are really good at what they do. It is why they are up where they are in the league,” said Martin.

“It will be a tough challenge. That is the beauty of the Championship. Every challenge is so different. We will be prepared for it. We played against them a few times over the last couple of years. They have benefited from continuity and consistency in what they do.”

“It is a tough game for sure, but it is one that we can be excited about after the weekend. It will be one where a couple of players get opportunities, and they need to take them,” he added.

PNE changes expected

North End started well against Millwall but couldn’t find a winner after being pegged back.

Lowe may be tempted to make some changes tonight with Liam Millar and Milutin Osmajic no doubt knocking on the door.

Duane Holmes and Will Keane didn’t have their absolute best games against Millwall and could to moved to the bench tonight.

Ched Evans is another option following his return to fitness whilst Alan Browne could return after being on the bench against Millwall.

Lowe has options at his disposal and will be attempting to find the right formula against a Southampton side who should have plenty of the ball if Martin’s usual approach is anything to go by.
