Why two PNE loan favourites won’t play for Leicester City tonight

Preston North End take on Leicester City tonight but won’t be seeing Daniel Iversen or Tom Cannon in action.

PNE are looking to get back on track after Saturday’s 4-0 thumping at the hands of West Bromwich Albion.

North End had opened the season without defeat in the first eight games of the season but crumbled against the Baggies.

A trip to take on promotion-chasing Leicester isn’t exactly ideal, with the Foxes looking like the favourites for the Championship title.

Ryan Lowe will be hoping to spring a real shock though and he will at least avoid facing two of his former North End players.

Daniel Iversen isn’t in the picture at Leicester City

One player Lowe inherited upon his appointment in December 2021 was goalkeeper Daniel Iversen.

The Danish stopper had initially joined on loan from Leicester back in the January 2021 window but played so well that North End struck an extension.

Iversen spent the full 2021-22 season at Deepdale but headed back to Leicester to compete with Danny Ward.

Few PNE goalkeepers in recent memory had the shot-stopping abilities of Iversen and he became a firm favourite with his miraculous saves.

Fans expected Iversen to make a real Premier League impact but he only really got a chance towards the end of the campaign as Leicester went down.

Iversen now finds himself as third-choice at Leicester without a single minute of action this season – what’s going on?

Leicester appointed Enzo Maresca over the summer and he wants his goalkeeper to be adept with the ball at his feet.

That isn’t really Iversen’s game; he doesn’t really fit the modern-day goalkeeper mould and his distribution is probably his biggest weakness.

Leicester signed fellow Danish stopper Mads Hermansen over the summer and Iversen doesn’t even get on the bench at this point, meaning he is very unlikely to feature tonight.

Tom Cannon out injured and won’t face PNE

Another former PNE loanee is in the Leicester ranks with Tom Cannon on board following his deadline day transfer.

Cannon spent the second half of last season on loan at Deepdale, arriving from Everton and making a huge impact.

Cannon hit eight goals in 20 appearances for PNE, going on a great run of form to spark some playoff dreams.

North End spent much of the summer trying to bring Cannon back to the club and seemed to pushing in the final days of the window.

Leicester swooped in though and agreed a deal worth around £7.5million, securing Cannon on a permanent basis.

Now on the treatment table with a stress fracture in his back, Cannon will not be facing PNE tonight – and that should cause a collective sigh of relief from the North End fanbase.

Leicester certainly have even more quality players for PNE to worry about, but at least Iversen and Cannon won’t come back to haunt us tonight.
