Preston North End coasted into the last 16 of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night with Seani Maguire starring against Cheltenham Town.
PNE were 2-0 up at the break thanks to goals from defenders Andrew Hughes and Joe Rafferty.
Kyle Vassell brought Cheltenham back into the game, but Maguire and Riis scored to give PNE a 4-1 win.
North End now move into the last 16, and will have dreams of landing a big tie tonight.
Maguire’s goal drought finally ends
Maguire has been excellent in recent weeks. He and Riis have been forming a strong partnership in attack, dovetailing well.
The only thing missing for the Irishman has been goals.
Maguire’s last goal came against Coventry City way back on December 29th 2020. Before last night, Maguire hadn’t found the net all year.
For all his hard work and fine approach play, Maguire deserved a goal – and hopefully there are now more to come.
Browne and Buchanan praise Maguire
Everybody around PNE is buzzing for Maguire, including teammate Alan Browne.
Browne took to Twitter to send a message to Maguire, stating ‘no one deserves it more’.
Ex-PNE left back David Buchanan – who had long left North End by the time Maguire joined – added that he was ‘class’ against Cheltenham.
Let’s hope Maguire now finds some form in front of goal and starts to find the net regularly.
