Preston 0-1 Tranmere: Olosunde given another chance as attack looks very thin

Preston lost 1-0 to Tranmere Rovers today as Jon Nolan’s goal handed the visitors the victory at Euxton.

North End beat Bamber Bridge 3-0 on Saturday afternoon and the attention turned to a behind-closed-doors game against Tranmere.

Preston slipped to defeat though as Ryan Lowe’s former club claimed the victory at North End’s training base.

New signing Jon Nolan bagged the only goal of the game, leaving Lowe with plenty to ponder even if it just a pre-season game.

Whilst the game wasn’t shown to the public, there were a couple of notes for fans to get stuck into…

Woodburn and Brady shirt numbers emerge

There were starts for new signings Ben Woodburn and Robbie Brady after they completed their moves to Deepdale on Monday evening.

Woodburn was in the midfield engine room alongside Ben Whiteman and Daniel Johnson whilst Brady featured at left wing back.

Shirt numbers weren’t confirmed when the two players arrived, but for anybody into that kind of thing, Woodburn donned number 20 – as he did against Bamber Bridge as a trialist – whilst Brady took number 15.

With the rest of the squad wearing their usual numbers, we can only assume that those numbers are now official.

Brady takes number 15 from Joe Rafferty whilst the last player to wear number 20 for Preston was Jayden Stockley.

Another chance for Matthew Olosunde

Preston appear to be finding a right wing back signing a little difficult, with a rumoured move for Cyrus Christie seemingly in doubt.

Brad Potts remains Preston’s first-choice right wing back as things stand and whilst we would still anticipate a new signing arriving, Matthew Olosunde is getting a chance.

The American only joined from Rotherham United last summer but has already been transfer-listed by Lowe after just two appearances last season.

There have been no takers for Olosunde so far but he featured as a right-sided centre back against Bamber Bridge and then at right wing back against Tranmere today.

Maybe Preston are just trying to keep Olosunde fit and appealing to other clubs, but Olosunde receiving minutes just gives him a chance to try and change Lowe’s mind.

North End’s attack looks really thin

It’s only one pre-season game but a goalless showing against League Two Tranmere won’t fill many with confidence.

Emil Riis and Mikey O’Neill led the line for Preston without any goalscoring success and there is little depth right now.

The numbers in Preston’s attack don’t look great; Seani Maguire is out injured already and Ched Evans wasn’t involved today.

Those two strikers combined for just three league goals last season and when the only other option to partner Riis is a relatively untested teenager, it doesn’t look great.

North End have to go and find goals from somewhere and after missing out on Andre Gray, this has to be the top priority in the transfer market alongside a right wing back.
