Ryan Lowe hails Jordan Storey after 'brilliant' display against Wigan Athletic

Ryan Lowe has praised Jordan Storey after a ‘brilliant’ performance in Preston North End’s 0-0 draw away at Wigan Athletic.

North End opened the new Championship season with a short trip to take on Wigan at the DW Stadium.

It was far from a classic as neither side managed to find the net in a 0-0 stalemate.

Preston did have chances through Troy Parrott and Emil Riis, but Ched Evans’ red card in the second half left Preston struggling to attack.

Wigan couldn’t break through either though, so Ryan Lowe will take the point and move on from a less-than-ideal performance.

That clean sheet will be a major boost for new goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, but also the back three ahead of him.

Liam Lindsay was given the nod ahead of Patrick Bauer in the heart of Preston’s back three with Andrew Hughes and Jordan Storey either side of him.

Hughes looks to be ideal for Lowe’s 3-5-2 setup but questions have been raised about Storey.

Lowe sent Storey out on loan to Sheffield Wednesday in January and the centre back helped Darren Moore’s men reach the League One play-offs.

Back at Preston this summer, some wondered whether the £750,000 signing from Exeter City in 2018 would be sold on after that loan spell.

Lowe has instead given Storey a chance to replace Sepp van den Berg as Preston’s right-sided centre back, and there have been encouraging signs with his ability going forward.

Storey was solid defensively against Wigan on Saturday and has now received major praise from boss Lowe.

North End’s official Twitter account quoted Lowe as saying that Storey was ‘brilliant’ against Wigan and has been ‘fantastic’ ever since coming back in over the summer.

Lowe added that Storey must now keep going and repay the faith and money Preston have invested in him over the years; the shirt appears to be his for the foreseeable future.

“Brilliant, he’s been fantastic since he came back in the building and I’ve said that to him after the game today,” said Lowe. “That’s what we wanted from him going out on loan, the club invested in him a few years ago and now it’s about repaying that,” he added.
