Blackpool have clinched promotion to the Championship after beating Lincoln City 2-1 in the League One playoff final today.
The Tangerines had a dismal start as Ollie Turton scored an own goal inside the first minute of the game, but they rallied back.
Kenny Dougall equalised before the break, and then repeated the trick to score the winner and send Blackpool back to the second tier.
This of course means that Blackpool and Preston are finally back in the same division for the first time since the 2009-10 season.
The last meeting between the two sides came in 2013, when North End secured 1-0 League Cup win at Deepdale thanks to Tom Clarke’s late winner.
It’s been a long, long time since the two sides have met, and only Declan Rudd and Paul Huntington are still at Preston from the side that won that night.
Captain Alan Browne subsequently has never faced Blackpool; he joined in January 2014 and has never had the chance to feature in North End’s biggest rivalry.
You can tell that Browne can’t wait, as he took to Twitter this evening to post just two words in response to Blackpool’s promotion – ‘about time’.
The Irishman is probably raring to go already having spent years with Preston but never faced the Tangerines, and let’s hope that feeling is matched across the squad.
