Paul Gallagher has called time on his playing career, hanging up his boots on Monday afternoon.

Preston confirmed the news that many have been expecting, with Frankie McAvoy appointed first-team head coach on a permanent basis having excelled in caretaker charge.

Part of that move means Gallagher will be first team coach, working closely with McAvoy and Steve Thompson moving forward.

The 36-year-old has decided to quit playing altogether, focusing just on coaching having combined the two roles this season.

Gallagher ends his playing career as a Preston legend, racking up 44 goals and 69 assists in 313 games for North End.

His presence in the side through the rise from League One has been vital, and his retirement will be an emotional one for all involved at Deepdale.

Midfielder Alan Browne has been at Preston alongside Gally since 2014, often featuring alongside the Scot in North End’s engine room.

Browne has taken to Twitter to post a heartfelt message to Gallagher, praising him as a player and as a person.

Browne noted that it’s been a pleasure to play alongside him, and is thankful that this isn’t goodbye, as Gallagher’s job will now be to help Browne and North End improve on the training pitch.
