Preston North End midfielder Ali McCann is nearing a return from injury as he provides a welcome injury boost.

This has been a tough day for PNE on the injury front.

Striker Ched Evans has been ruled out for the rest of the season but his injury appears to be very serious.

North End have today confirmed that Evans is undergoing surgery after developing a ‘serious medical condition’.

The Welshman suffered a neck injury at Rotherham United and is now facing ‘potentially life-changing circumstances’.

We won’t see Evans in a PNE shirt again this season and you have to wonder if he will ever return from this huge blow.

PNE fans needed a lift today and there is some positive injury news to report on midfielder Ali McCann.

The Northern Ireland international suffered a thigh tear against Luton Town in February and maybe made it worse by playing on.

We haven’t seen McCann in action since then and the expectation was that McCann would miss the rest of the season.

However, boss Ryan Lowe has now outlined that McCann is ‘making good progress’ in his recovery.

Lowe told PNE’s official Twitter account that McCann will be back in full training next week and that he should involved in squads before the summer.

That’s a major boost for North End, just as fans deal with the blow of losing Evans.

McCann will have to fight to win his place back as Ben Whiteman, Alan Browne and Daniel Johnson were excellent as a midfield trio against Blackpool last weekend.

McCann is a tireless worker though and his return will be a welcome piece of news for Lowe and co ahead of the final games of the campaign.
