We all hoped for Ben Davies to make a real impact at Liverpool, but he looks set to suffer another blow.
The Reds swooped in to sign Davies from Preston on deadline day last month, handing him a dream move to Anfield.
It’s not every day that a Preston player – one that has come up through the North End ranks – is offered the chance to join the Premier League champions, so Davies left with the well-wishes of everyone at Deepdale.
The deal was modest; £1.6million with a 20% sell-on clause and Sepp van den Berg on loan, but with Davies set to walk away for free, Preston had to take the deal.
So far, the 25-year-old has yet to make his Liverpool debut, and is often left out of Jurgen Klopp’s squad as he struggles for opportunities at Anfield.
One recent report from The Athletic suggested that Davies could even be sold this summer, suggesting that Liverpool saw him as a cheap signing and an easy way to make a profit.
We had hoped that wasn’t true, but The Athletic now claim that Liverpool are finalising a deal for RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate, which could cost around €40million (£34million).
The Frenchman is a highly-regarded young centre back, and points towards Davies being on the fringes at Liverpool heading into next season.
Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip will all be back from injury, Nathaniel Phillips is faring well at the moment and Ozan Kabak could be signed permanently from Schalke.
With another centre back on the way, Davies may already be fighting for his Liverpool future, but us Preston fans have all seen how good he is, and will be confident that he can carve out a successful Premier League career – even if it does end up being away from Merseyside.
