Ben Whiteman compares Preston's Sean Maguire to £180k-a-week Liverpool star

Preston striker Seani Maguire hasn’t been in the goals for a while now, but he has now received a lofty comparison from Ben Whiteman.

Maguire was a livewire in his first season at Preston, notching 10 goals in 24 league outings after a 2017 move from Cork City.

Sadly, hamstring injuries have really impacted Maguire’s pace and he has had to adapt his game.

No longer a lightning-quick forward, Maguire’s game is more based around dropping in and linking up play.

Maguire’s goal tally has taken a hit as a result.

The Irishman hasn’t scored in 12 league outings this season. In 29 league games last season, Maguire scored just three times.

In Maguire last 85 league appearances, he has managed just eight goals.

Some have been heavily critical of Maguire’s lack of goals, feeling that Preston can’t keep starting a striker who doesn’t score.

It’s clear though that Preston are, right now, a better team with Maguire included. His link-up play and work rate have been vital to Emil Riis enjoying great success this term.

Now, Preston ace Ben Whiteman has compared Maguire to £180,000-a-week Liverpool star Roberto Firmino, believing their overall game is so much more important than just the goal tally.

Whiteman noted that Riis is really benefitting from playing with Maguire, praising the Irishman’s ‘outstanding’ link-up play and flick-ons.

“Sean Maguire is probably going under the radar in terms of how well he has played,” said Whiteman, as quoted by Lancs Live.

“I don’t think you can really batter a player for that (lack of goals); you look at Bobby Firmino at Liverpool and how he links the squad together. You can tell when he is not playing and I think Seani does that for us; since he has come into the team he has been outstanding with his link-play, strength and winning little flick-ons.”

“You look at that front two we have got now, Emil is definitely benefitting from playing with him,” he added.
