Billy Davies hails three players he managed at Preston North End

Billy Davies has hailed his former Preston North End trio Chris Lucketti, Graham Alexander and Paul McKenna.

PNE fans may have mixed memories of the Billy Davies era.

Davies took over from Craig Brown back in 2004, guiding North End into successive Championship playoff finishes.

North End were able to put together long unbeaten runs under Davies and famously conceded just 30 goals in the 2005-06 season.

That all went out of the window when Davies quit PNE for Derby County in 2006, with some treating him as something of a Judas figure.

The cavalcade of boos Davies received upon his first return to Deepdale was ferocious but the Scot clearly still has fond memories from his time at North End.

Billy Davies praises former Preston North End trio

Davies has spoken to Unsung Sport about his football career and was asked to name some of the underrated players he has coached.

Davies started with his time at PNE and named three pretty popular North End players.

Unsurprisingly, Davies named Paul McKenna first of all.

A homegrown midfielder in the PNE ranks, McKenna was a fan favourite who played a vital role under Davies.

It was no surprise when Davies came calling to take McKenna to Nottingham Forest back in 2009, bringing his time at PNE to an end.

Davies also went for Graham Alexander, an absolute club icon who was Mr Reliable from the penalty spot throughout the Davies years.

Chris Lucketti was the last pick for Davies, hailing the former Huddersfield Town defender as a superb captain at PNE.

Lucketti ended up being phased out as Youl Mawene and Claude Davis formed an outstanding partnership but Davies appreciated his service.

“One that I had at Preston was a boy called Paul McKenna, eventually became club captain,” said Davies. “A fantastic midfield player, a fantastic winner, a real quality player, admired by his teammates and Paul McKenna, I think in his younger days, probably could have and should have went higher, but he was a very talented player.”

“The other two I would select at Preston; Graham Alexander, a fantastic Scotland international, excellent captain, again a real winner, great to work with, fantastic lad on the training ground, great in the dressing room and he gave everything he could every single match.”

“Finally at Preston, Chris Lucketti, the big, tough centre back! Big Chris was an outstanding leader, an outstanding player to have in your club, a great team player,” he added.

All three players were incredible servants at North End and Davies praising them will leave fans reminiscing about his era in charge.
