Chris Kirkland and Ben Davies crossed paths at Preston North End in the 2015/16 season. Although the latter spent some time away on loan in that season, in the time Kirkland spent with him he could tell he had huge potential.
The former Liverpool, England and Preston goalkeeper spoke to Playing Away From Home recently, and said he massively enjoyed his time at North End.
Brought in as a number 2 to Jordan Pickford, his game time was limited, but his experience would have helped with North End having just come back up to the Championship from League One.
Ben Davies would have been 20 that season, and I don’t think any Preston fan would have envisaged him playing for Liverpool 5-and-half-years later.
Kirkland went on to say “His ability and attitude was spot on, and I hope he gets a chance at Liverpool.”
Chris Kirkland was the experienced understudy to Jordan Pickford in that season, and he loved what he saw. He had no doubt that he would play at the top level, and is surprised to see him going through mixed form now.
Kirkland had just one season at Deepdale, but he will have provided Pickford with a lot of help, having been capped by England himself and won the Champions League with Liverpool as well.
