It was only a fortnight ago that I wrote of how Preston goalkeeper Chris Maxwell may have to leave the club.

After all, the Welshman is behind Declan Rudd in the North End pecking order and well out of favour.

Maxwell has failed to make a single appearance for North End since being sent off at Ipswich in November, losing his spot to Rudd.

Now, HITC report that Bristol City want to sign Maxwell in January, after first enquiring about him last summer.

Major League Soccer sides are also taking an interest in Maxwell, who wants to move on for first-team football.

Maxwell has lost his spot in the Welsh national team squad, and needs football to put himself back on Ryan Giggs’ radar.

North End surely won’t stand in Maxwell’s way, with Alex Neil keen on signing a new goalkeeper himself.

Bristol City have endured problems in goal this season, and Maxwell makes sense as a potential solution for Lee Johnson.

Maxwell’s contract expires in 2020, meaning North End will still be in a strong position to land a fee in January.
