Preston boss Alex Neil still finds himself under pressure at Deepdale – but that hasn’t stopped him from being touted for a job elsewhere.
North End have been so inconsistent this season, losing 17 of their 35 Championship games; only four teams have lost more, and three of those occupy the relegation places.
It has been a season of transition at Preston, certainly because of the manic January window, but some fans are sick of perceived ‘excuses’ from the North End boss.
It’s unclear whether or not Neil will be in charge next season, but could we yet see him make a big move back to Scotland?
Celtic have parted ways with Neil Lennon after he offered his resignation last month, and don’t appear to be any closer to finding his replacement.
Neil was wanted by Celtic back in 2019, so interest from the Bhoys again wouldn’t exactly be a huge shock, even if he isn’t their clear first choice.
The 39-year-old has plenty of fans in the media, and Chris Sutton is one of them having watched Neil take charge of his former club Norwich City.
Sutton has now told the Daily Record (10/03, p57) that he thinks Neil should be in the running for the Celtic job alongside Sean Dyche.
Sutton thinks Neil gets a ‘bashing’ at Preston, despite playing a ‘decent brand of football’, whilst praising his organisational skills and knowledge of the Scottish game, seemingly feeling that he ticks the boxes for Celtic.
“Alex Neil is another one,” said Sutton. “He gets a bit of a bashing at times for the job he does at Preston but I don’t see them as a team with a budget up there with the teams who are going to push for promotion. They play a decent brand of football, he’s an organiser and knows the Scottish game,” he added.
