Former Preston North End striker Simon Makienok is earning rave reviews having found form with Hvidovre back in his native Netherlands.

PNE have had decent success with Danish players in recent times.

Daniel Iversen was a fan favourite in his 18-month loan spell with the club and Emil Riis has become a fantastic striker since joining from Randers.

North End headed back to the Danish market to sign Mads Frøkjær-Jensen from Odense last summer and the playmaker has dazzled fans with his creativity and technical brilliance.

Before Iversen, Riis and Frøkjær-Jensen, there was striker Simon Makienok, who joined the club from Palermo way back in the summer of 2016.

The giant 6ft 7in striker only spent one year at Deepdale but became something of a cult hero, especially after a hat-trick at Bournemouth in the EFL Cup in 2016.

Goals at Brighton and Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest and Bristol City made Makienok something of an away-day hero, curiously never scoring at Deepdale.

Makienok’s loan spell wasn’t extended and he ended up with Utrecht, Dynamo Dresden, St. Pauli and Horsens before joining Hvidovre last summer…

Hvidvore is the hometown club of Frøkjær-Jensen and they currently sit rock bottom of the Danish Superliga table.

There has been one bright spot of late though with Makienok impressing.

Makienok scored against Viborg at the end of February before adding a goal and an assist in a 4-2 win over Lyngby.

Hvidovre director Peter Lassen has told Tipsbladet that he absolutely loves Makienok, branding him ‘outstanding’ in the dressing room.

Lassen feels that Makienok is ‘world class’ in terms of helping young players and leading by example, offering a valuable resource with his experience.

“Simon is a good boy, not just on the pitch. He is outstanding in the dressing room as well. He takes care of our young players and chats with them. He is world class there,” said Lassen.

The 33-year-old is fighting to land a new contract at Hvidovre and his character may be just as valuable as his goals as the former PNE striker shows that he certainly isn’t finished just yet.
