Former Preston North End defender Ben Davies joined Glasgow Rangers this summer after a difficult 18 months at Liverpool.

He never made an appearance for Jurgen Klopp’s side and spent last season on loan at Championship side Sheffield United.

The 27-year-old will hope to nail down a place in the starting eleven for the Scottish this side this season, especially as they have qualified for the group stage of the Champions League for the first time since 2010.

Rangers have been to the bottom of the Scottish pyramid and all the way back to the top in that time, whilst also finishing runners-up in the Europa League to Eintracht Frankfurt last season.

On Wednesday night they beat PSV Eindhoven 1-0 away to win the tie 3-2 on aggregate. Although Davies was absent through injury, he played some part in the earlier round against Belgian side Union St.Gilloise.

The group stage has now been drawn and Davies could finally get a game at Anfield, as they have been drawn with last season’s finalists.

Rangers will also face home and away games with Ajax and Napoli, two European giants, and trips that the fans and players will relish.

Hopefully Davies is fit for those games, as all six matches take place over a short nine week period due to a change in schedule with the World Cup kicking off in November.

The centre-back has started just one game this season for Rangers, coming in the Scottish Premiership against St Johnstone. Connor Goldson and American James Sands started both the games against PSV so Davies will have some competition on his hands this season, and there is also John Souttar who signed from Hearts but is on the injury table with Davies.

Preston fans will be delighted to see Davies in Champions League action if he does indeed get to play a few games.

The atmosphere at Ibrox will be electric and the away games will be memorable occasions as well. Davies was a great player for North End and he deserves these moments after difficult 18 months at Liverpool.
