Former Preston goalkeeper Andy Lonergan has had a nomadic career in recent times, and he’s now secured another move – this time to Everton.

Everton boss Rafael Benitez has confirmed to the Liverpool Echo that Lonergan has joined the Toffees as a backup goalkeeper.

Ex-North End loanee Jordan Pickford is the current first-choice stopper at Goodison Park, but loanee Robin Olsen has returned to Roma.

Everton have already signed Asmir Begovic as cover for Pickford this summer, but have still signed Lonergan – even with youngster Joao Virginia also on the books.

Lonergan, 37, racked up 231 appearances for Preston after emerging through the youth ranks, and some may have thought he would see out his career with his hometown club.

Lonergan left Preston in 2011 for a move to Leeds United, and has been up and down the country ever since.

Bolton Wanderers, Fulham, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Leeds again, Middlesbrough, Rochdale, Liverpool, Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion have all signed Lonergan over the last nine years.

The veteran has essentially carved out a career as experienced backup, playing only 14 league games in the last four years.

His move to Everton sees him join up with Preston legend Alan Kelly though, who may have played a key role in the decision to sign Lonergan on a free transfer.

Lonergan actually spent time training with Everton under David Moyes back in 2011 and finally makes the move to the blue half of Merseyside.
