It would be fair to say that Aiden McGeady is one of the most talented players we have seen grace the Deepdale turf in recent years.
A player capable of producing magical moments, McGeady give Preston fans some great memories in his one season at Deepdale.
His pirouette turn against Arsenal which led to Callum Robinson’s goal. His last-minute equaliser away to Blackburn Rovers which caused unforgettable scenes in the away end. A stunning goal against Huddersfield Town stands out too. It was a real shame he wasn’t brought to the club on a permanent deal.

McGeady admitted himself he did want to return to the club, however it was more down to the club than him that a move didn’t transpire. Looking back it’s a travesty Peter Ridsdale wasn’t able to sort out the deal.
Everton were not demanding a big fee and with Preston going on to finish 7th in the league the season after, there’s no doubt McGeady could have provided the difference to finish in a play-off position.
As it was he joined Simon Grayson at Sunderland and scored on his return to Deepdale, doing an ‘Adebayor’ and celebrating in front of the Preston fans. Something he has since said he regrets but emotions were running high. Sunderland were relegated that season but McGeady has been a key player for The Black Cats in League One. They finds themselves in the play-offs this year but with a tough semi against Lincoln City.
They could go on to face Blackpool in the final, but if Sunderland don’t manage to get promoted, McGeady could find himself playing in the Championship anyway.

The Sun on Sunday (16/05, p59) suggests Darren Ferguson would be keen to bring him to Peterborough. The Posh finished second in League One to secure promotion and McGeady’s contract is up in the summer.
Now 35, the Irishman is coming towards the end of his career but still has the technical capability that has wowed fans throughout his career. It would be a big signing for former Preston manager Ferguson as they look to stay up in the Championship next season – though Darragh MacAnthony has played down the rumour.
Would another McGeady return to Deepdale result in a hostile reception again? Time is a great healer…
