Former Preston player Sam Johnstone impresses on England debut

West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper and former Preston North End loanee Sam Johnstone made his England debut on Sunday evening.

The 28-year-old kept a clean sheet as The Three Lions beat Romania 1-0 in their final game before Euro 2020 kicks off.

Another former Preston player Jordan Pickford will be Gareth Southgate’s number one going into the tournament but Johnstone showed he will be ready if called upon.

Looking Back At OUR Euro 2020 Predictions

The Preston-born ‘keeper had an impressive season despite West Brom being relegated from the top flight, and may well spark some interest to stay in that league. The Sun reported last week that West Ham United may be interested in a deal for him.

Sam Johnstone was part of the Preston team that gained promotion from League One in 2015, before returning for a brief spell the following season.

An international debut for a goalkeeper is never easy, especially in a friendly against lesser opposition.

You are pretty much expected to keep a clean sheet, but Romania gave Johnstone plenty to do.

However he handled it admirably, with one reaction save particularly drawing plenty of plaudits.

Plenty took to Twitter to congratulate Johnstone on his debut and also commend his display.
