Preston only have two games left this season, but we won’t be seeing Daniel Johnson play in either of them.
This weekend, North End host Barnsley at Deepdale before heading to Nottingham Forest on the final weekend of the season.
Last weekend’s 1-0 win at Coventry City has secured Preston’s Championship status for another season, and we could see interim head coach Frankie McAvoy make some changes.
Tom Bayliss would surely love to start, and his chances of featuring in midfield have received something of a boost after Johnson was shut down for the season.
Johnson hasn’t played since a calf injury sustained in the 1-1 draw against Norwich City at the beginning of the month, and won’t play again this term.
McAvoy has today confirmed that Preston are ‘just going to leave’ Johnson out for the last two games, believing it’s not worth risking him.
Instead, Johnson will be given the time to heal up and get himself ready for pre-season and next term.
Johnson was Preston’s Player of the Year last term, but hasn’t quite hit the same heights this term.
Speculation over his future seemed to hang over him in the first half of the season, but even after signing a new deal in January, Johnson couldn’t quite return to top form.
Let’s hope this extended break can get Johnson fit and firing for next season, as he’s undoubtedly one of the most talented players in the North End ranks.
