Preston North End considered Graham Alexander as a replacement for Frankie McAvoy – and he has just won a managerial award at Motherwell.
Preston parted ways with McAvoy on Monday night after a frustrating Championship season to date.
We now know that the top target was Ryan Lowe, with the Liverpudlian trading Plymouth Argyle for North End on Tuesday.
Preston did though have other names in mind just in case Lowe didn’t come.
The Sun claim that Motherwell boss Alexander was one of them, alongside Callum Davidson and Michael Carrick.
Alexander has a great connection with the Preston fans having turned out for North End in his playing days.
With more than 400 games for Preston, Alexander is something of a hero at Deepdale.
Alexander’s managerial career has seen him take charge at Fleetwood Town, Scunthorpe United, Salford City and now Motherwell, all after an interim spell at Preston in 2011.

Alexander is now earning huge plaudits with Motherwell. Sitting fifth in the Scottish Premiership table, Motherwell are enjoying a fine season.
For the second time this season, Alexander has now been named Scottish Premiership manager of the month.
Motherwell claimed three impressive wins from four games in November, securing another award for Alexander.
He may have missed out on the Preston job, but many at North End will only want the best for Alexander, who will always be a club icon.
