A left-footed centre-back is like gold dust these days. Ben Davies was one of the best in the Championship, and Preston were lucky to have him as a mainstay of their defence for the last four years.
Now he’s moved onto pastures new, North End are keen to bring in another left-footed defender to help balance things out.
Liam Lindsay ticks that box but he isn’t the most mobile of defenders. However with Andrew Hughes playing as a left-sided centre-back at the end of the season, Frankie McAvoy may be happy with the options currently available to him, if Lindsay were to return.
In January, The Sun claimed Preston had an eye on Luton captain Sonny Bradley. The 6ft 5in defender is a huge presence, and would be colossal alongside Patrick Bauer. He has been a rock in the Luton defence since 2018, as they recorded an impressive 12th place finish in the Championship last term.
He has now committed his future to the club, with the 29-year-old signing a new contract. It comes as a bit of a surprise as The East Anglian Daily Times had recently suggested it was a two-horse race between Preston and Ipswich Town for his signature.
Preston will move on to other targets , but former loanees Sepp van den Berg and Liam Lindsay are likely to be at the top of the list for now. Bauer is set to return to training in pre-season whilst Jordan Storey enjoyed a bit of form under Frankie McAvoy.
Club legend Paul Huntington will embark on his 10th season with the club, but it is definitely the mobile aspect the squad needs in the backline. If the three at the back formation with wing-backs continues, then a couple of central defenders could be on the shopping list this summer.
