Preston fans were buzzing in 2018 when the club signed Lukas Nmecha – but he ended up dividing opinion.
North End needed a new striker for the 2018-19 season, and after missing out on Kieffer Moore, a deal was struck with Manchester City for Nmecha.
The youngster had earned a burgeoning reputation at City, with many backing him for stardom, and a loan move to Preston was seen as the next step in his development.
Fans had dreams of him replicating Tammy Abraham’s success at Bristol City, but Nmecha maybe wasn’t quite ready to lead the line for North End.
He ended up managing just four goals in 44 games for Preston, and spent most of his time playing out on the right flank rather than as a centre forward.
Preston didn’t bring Nmecha back last season, but he enjoyed limited success at Wolfsburg and Middlesbrough before returning to City over the summer.
The 21-year-old has now moved on to Anderlecht, and he is starting to show his quality again with four goals in nine games for the Belgian side.
Nmecha has been so good for Anderlecht that City are now desperate to open contract talks with him according to Voetbalkrant in Belgium, believing that he can become a first-team striker at the Etihad Stadium.
Nmecha is out of contract at the end of the season, meaning City could end up losing him unless they manage to sort out a new contract for him.
Preston fans may not have been convinced, but the same goes for Andy Carroll, Danny Welbeck and Josh King, who all became Premier League regulars after disappointing Preston spells.
The same could happen for Nmecha, and the rumours of City moving to keep him show how highly-regarded he still is at the Etihad Stadium.
