Preston midfielder Alan Browne has left some fans wondering about his future at the club after making comments about his Premier League dream.
Browne has gone away on international duty with Ireland and has been speaking to the press ahead of facing Belgium on Saturday evening.
The North End captain has told the Irish Examiner that he would give absolutely anything to play in the Premier League.
Browne noted that he would like to reach that level with Preston, but is seemingly open to achieving that feat somewhere else.
Browne added that he is pushing 27 now and is running out of time to reach England’s top flight, again raising the possibility of a move away.
“For me personally it’s an ambition of mine, to one day get there,” said Browne. “I’d like to do that with my current club, Preston. If it’s elsewhere then so be it. I’d give anything to play at the top level, that’s where every player aspires to be.”
“I haven’t done it yet. I’m 26, pushing 27 and there’s not a lot of time left. It’s not something I have focused too much on, just stay in the moment, play my current football, which is in the Championship, do my best for my club and see where that progresses,” he added.
Browne signed a new contract at Preston in January 2021, agreeing to stay at Deepdale until the summer of 2024.
That means the midfielder is now approaching the final two years of his contract and if not sold this summer, will soon be into the final 18 months.
We’ve been here before with Browne, fearing that his value will diminish as his contract runs down – or that he simply leaves for free.
This is the most vocal Browne has been about his future in some time and will naturally leave fans wondering if an exit is on the horizon.
Browne has been with Preston for eight years but has never really come close to winning promotion to the Premier League.
Many fans would feel that, whilst Browne has been an outstanding servant for Preston, he hasn’t been in his best form of late.
With Ali McCann chomping at the bit for midfield starts, Browne’s role in the Preston midfield doesn’t seem absolutely secure right now.
It’s unclear if there would be huge interest in Browne this summer, but it seems the Irishman isn’t entirely ruling out a move.
