Preston have sent a message to Blackpool’s Jake Daniels after he became the first openly gay football in England since the 90’s.
This day will go down in English football history with Daniels taking the brave to step to announce that he is gay.
Daniels becomes the first player in English football to be openly gay since Justin Fashanu in the 1990’s.
Thomas Hitzlsperger and Robbie Rogers both had spells playing in England and have since come out as gay too, but Daniels will be the first active gay player in England for 30 years.
Preston send message to Blackpool’s Jake Daniels
It’s an incredibly brave decision for Daniels, especially at the age of just 17.
His decision will hopefully be an inspiration to other football around the country and the world, who maybe haven’t felt that the representation is there.
Football still has a long way to go in terms of inclusion and attitudes towards LGBTQ+ communities, but Daniels taking this step will hopefully help make the change.
Daniels has received plenty of support from clubs up and down the country and Preston have been a part of it.
The rivalry between Blackpool and Preston is well-known but that couldn’t matter any less when it comes to something as important as this.
Preston sent a message to Daniels on Twitter, commending him for his courage and bravery whilst sharing the hope for more players to follow in his footsteps.
This is a great step from Preston and we hope the fanbase can match this attitude.
Forget the rivalry here, Daniels’ step is an important one for English football and he will hopefully have the backing of fanbases all over the UK – including Preston.
We absolutely echo the sentiment from Preston and are incredibly proud of Daniels for his bravery at such a young age.
