Cardiff boss suggests Preston blocked him from signing Cameron Archer as well as Seani Maguire

Preston travel to take on Cardiff City today, with Steve Morison seemingly cursing North End for making him miss out on not one but two strikers in Sean Maguire and Cameron Archer.

Two things you don’t hear much about – Preston beating a Championship rival to a striker signing and Preston fending off interest in one of their players.

We’re mostly joking, but there is some truth to that.

In January, Cardiff came calling for Seani Maguire.

The Irish striker has struggled for goals in recent times but impressed against Cardiff in January – so much so that Morison wanted to sign him.

Preston rejected Cardiff’s loan bid for Maguire, believing that he would still play an important role under Ryan Lowe.

Maguire hasn’t actually played since then though, once again struggling with injuries.

Now back and working his way back to fitness, Maguire could be in the Preston squad today and may yet feature against the Bluebirds.

Intriguingly though, this isn’t the only striker deal Preston blocked Cardiff from making in January.

Cardiff boss Morison has now admitted to Wales Online that they had a conversation with Cameron Archer, attempting to snap him up on loan from Aston Villa.

In the end though, Archer chose Preston and just hasn’t stopped scoring ever since.

Morison likely doesn’t want to face Archer today and we can’t blame him. With five goals in 10 Preston outings, Archer has been a sensation for North End.

Cardiff will likely unleash ex-Preston striker Jordan Hugill against North End today, but missing out on Archer likely stings for Morison.

This isn’t the first time a Championship boss has admitted that Preston beat them to Archer. Ex-Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson revealed a similar story last month.

We can only hope that Archer scores again today and then wants to return to Preston this summer; oh how the rest of the Championship would hate that.
