Report: Preston on the verge of signing David Cornell after Peterborough release

Preston are set to sign David Cornell as the former Peterborough United goalkeeper prepares to follow Freddie Woodman to Deepdale.

North End snapped up Woodman on a permanent deal from Newcastle United on Tuesday evening.

Woodman will of course be Preston’s first-choice goalkeeper moving forward but another stopper is absolutely needed.

Declan Rudd has retired whilst both Connor Ripley and Mathew Hudson have been released.

An experienced Championship stopper would be ideal and Preston are now going for Cornell.

Preston are set to sign David Cornell

TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook has taken to Twitter tonight to claim that Cornell is on the verge of signing for Preston.

Cornell, 31, is a free agent having been released by relegated Peterborough United at the end of the season.

The Welsh stopper came through at Swansea City before leaving for Oldham Athletic in 2015.

Northampton Town swooped for Cornell in 2016 and he earned a strong reputation there – even being linked with Preston back in December 2019.

Cornell instead joined Ipswich Town in 2020 and after just a year there, he moved on to Peterborough United last summer.

Despite still having a year left on his deal, Cornell was released – exactly the same situation as with Ipswich a year earlier.

Cornell’s numbers don’t look great; he ranked bottom of Championship goalkeepers for goals prevented, allowing more than seven goals more than expected.

Peterborough fans didn’t seem to love Cornell but Posh goalkeepers have never really had the best of luck in the Championship.

Cornell’s primary role will be to offer experienced cover for Woodman, and he will know that he is second-choice at Deepdale.

This signing won’t exactly excite fans but Preston needed another goalkeeper and appear to have got one without committing too much money to the deal.
