The story of Robbie Savage at Macclesfield FC has captured national attention and former Preston talent Lewis Fensome is playing his role in their rise.

Macclesfield Town sadly went out of business back in 2020, but a phoenix club was established ahead of the 2021-22 season.

Playing in the North West Counties League Premier Division – the ninth tier of English football – Macclesfield are on the long road back to league football.

BBC One recently ran a documentary on Macclesfield, heavily featuring former Premier League star Robbie Savage.

The Welshman has joined the Macclesfield board and serves as their director of football in an effort to drag the club back up the leagues.

Sitting top of the table, Macclesfield appear to be closing in on promotion and the first step in their long road back.

In January, Macclesfield swooped to sign defender Lewis Fensome from Lancaster City to try and aid their promotion push.

That name may ring a bell to Preston fans for more than one reason.

Father Andy Fensome was a Preston player and is still a youth team coach at North End to this day.

Lewis was in the Preston ranks and spent time on loan at Lancaster before joining them permanently in 2018 having been let go by North End.

The defender has been a regular at the Giant Axe and clearly did enough to impress Macclesfield and earn a move in January.

Earlier this week, a tweet surfaced praising Fensome’s impact at Macclesfield having won seven games out of nine since his move to Moss Rose.

Savage retweeted the post, throwing his support behind the defender having made a major impression for Macclesfield.

The 21-year-old will also be hoping to advance up the leagues having missed out on a future at Preston, and he certainly seems to be on the right track.
