Rumour Mill: Preston show interest in signing Fulham wing back Marlon Fossey

Preston are interested in Marlon Fossey as North End join Bolton Wanderers in the race to sign the Fulham right wing back.

North End are committed to a 3-5-2 system under Ryan Lowe but new wing back are needed on both sides.

Brad Potts played well on the right side last season but isn’t a natural in that role and needs competition for his place.

That isn’t going to come from Matthew Olosunde with the signing from last summer already transfer-listed.

Yet whilst one American won’t be playing at right wing back for Preston next season, another one could.

Preston are interested in Marlon Fossey

The Bolton News report that Preston have now become the main rivals to Bolton Wanderers in the race for Marlon Fossey.

Fulham wing back Fossey is available this summer as he has just one year left on his deal at Craven Cottage.

The 23-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Bolton, recording one goal and five assists in just 15 games.

Fossey needs to leave Fulham and play first-team football and his pace, ability to carry the ball forward and creative contributions make him very attractive.

The big problem with Fossey is his injury record.

Fossey only played 15 games at Bolton because of a torn meniscus.

Fossey also had a knee problem on loan at Shrewsbury Town last season and has missed a number of Fulham Under-23 games over the years with injury problems.

Preston went down this road last summer by signing Connor Wickham and Izzy Brown, gambling on both players overcoming their injury woes.

Neither of them were able to make a single Championship start for Preston due to their injury woes and are no longer with the club.

Lowe wants robust players who can handle a big workload in the Championship and you have to question whether Fossey can do that.

This is a tough one because Fossey’s skillset could be ideal for Lowe’s system but if he can only play half of the games, is it worth the gamble?

We would imagine that Fossey is one of a number of options being considered for the right wing back role at Preston whilst Birmingham City are also keen on Fossey.

Rumour rating: 7/10. We can absolutely understand why Preston are keen on Fossey as his dynamic attributes down the right side would give Lowe and North End something different. The injury woes are a major concern though, especially as Preston would be expected to pay a fee for Fossey.
