Preston midfielder Ben Whiteman has been dropped for the last two league games – and Frankie McAvoy has admitted he wants more from him.
North End paid big money for Whiteman in January. Almost £2million to sign him from Doncaster Rovers.
Whiteman scored a superb free kick against Stoke City earlier this season and even bagged against West Bromwich Albion too.
Bizarrely though, Whiteman now finds himself on the Preston bench.
Whiteman was benched against Queens Park Rangers for Ali McCann. When he went off injured, McCann was replaced by Alan Browne – not Whiteman.
With McCann still out against Derby, Browne was again picked over Whiteman.
Preston couldn’t control the midfield and only really started getting a foot on the ball when Whiteman came on as a substitute.
Whiteman has been better than Browne this season, and you can certainly argue he has been better than Ryan Ledson too.
Whiteman needs to be brought back into a struggling Preston side, but that may not happen.
Boss McAvoy has claimed that he needs more from Whiteman, wanting him to control games from the word go rather than just as a substitute.
He can only do that if he’s in the team though, and we would hope to see Whiteman back in the starting XI against Coventry City tonight.
“Yeah to be honest, but he never played in the QPR game because I felt the game prior to that, although he scored the goal against Stoke, I just needed more from him,” said McAvoy on whether it was tough to leave Whiteman out.
“We know he is a good player, but you get judged by performances – we need him to have the type of impact he had on Saturday from the beginning, when he starts,” he added.
