Preston North End’s big game this month comes against bitter rivals Blackpool – but goalkeeper Chris Maxwell will miss out through injury.
Excitement is building for Preston’s trip up the M55 – even with games against Derby County and Coventry City before then.
Like it or not, that game at Bloomfield Road could define Frankie McAvoy’s time in charge. Some fans are already restless, and losing to Blackpool would be a big problem.
Right now, Blackpool sit four points above North End in the Championship table. The Tangerines would be forgiven for believing they can beat Preston in just a couple of weeks.
This will be the first league meeting between the sides in more than 11 years – there is a lot riding on this game.
Blackpool have now suffered an early blow with goalkeeper Maxwell set to miss out.
The Welsh stopper is no stranger to Preston fans having joined North End from Fleetwood Town in 2016.
Maxwell was allowed to join Blackpool in 2019, and has rebuilt his career at Bloomfield Road. Blackpool fans love Maxwell, and he has become their nailed-on first-choice starter in goal.
However, Maxwell suffered an injury against Blackburn Rovers before the international break.
Blackpool were hoping for good news, but The Sun (10/10/2021, p63) claim that Maxwell will now be out for six weeks.
That means Maxwell will miss a reunion with Preston, with Stuart Moore set to deputise.
With just two league wins this season, Preston need as many boosts as possible – and Maxwell missing the big derby is a small positive.
