Former Preston North End boss Darren Ferguson is set for yet another return to Peterborough United, replacing Grant McCann.

TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook reports that McCann has left his position as Peterborough boss after a tricky run of form.

Five defeats in the last seven League One games means McCann has lost his job at Peterborough for the second time.

McCann was sacked by Peterborough in 2018 but returned in February having been sacked by Hull City.

McCann replaced Darren Ferguson then, but Crook claims Ferguson is unbelievably returning for another spell with the Posh.

Ferguson started his managerial career with Peterborough back in 2007 and won two promotions before PNE appointed him.

The 50-year-old’s time at PNE was pretty miserable and he lasted less than a year in the job.

That sacking resulted in Darren’s father Sir Alex not only recalling his Manchester United loanees from North End, but also convincing Stoke City’s Tony Pulis to do the same.

Ferguson returned to Peterborough just a few months after that departure, guiding the club to the Championship via the playoffs.

That stint lasted four years before Ferguson was sacked, with Doncaster Rovers then pouncing for him in 2015.

Ferguson guided Doncaster to promotion from League Two in 2017 but resigned a year later, paving the way for a shock third spell at Peterborough in January 2019.

Ferguson again won a promotion in 2021, but resigned earlier this year with Peterborough struggling against relegation.

McCann was brought back to replace him but Darragh MacAnthony seemingly only has two numbers in his phone and Ferguson is coming back once again.

A fourth spell in charge of Peterborough is truly bizarre stuff, as is the fact that PNE was the only job where Ferguson didn’t win a promotion.

The Scot will now look to add another promotion to his CV in an attempt to join PNE in the Championship once again.
