Former Preston North End man Julian Ward secures huge Liverpool job

Liverpool have today confirmed the exit of Michael Edwards – and that means a major promotion for former Preston North End man Julian Ward.

Edwards has been in charge of Liverpool’s transfers in recent years, working as technical director at Anfield.

The 42-year-old has overseen the signings of Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk, Andrew Robertson, Fabinho, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

This has been a period of immense success for Edwards and Liverpool, but he is now set to leave at the end of the season.

Liverpool’s statement confirms that Julian Ward will now step up into Edwards’ role having been director of loan management at Anfield.

Ward has ties to Preston. As noted on Liverpool’s official website, Ward was a football consultant and performance analyst at North End from 2002 to 2003.

To now be Liverpool’s technical director is a stunning rise for Ward, who can’t have imagined such a job when he was working away at North End.

In 2019, it was claimed that Ward held talks with Preston over a deal to send Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher to North End, but nothing materialised.

Additionally, Ward will have signed off on Sepp van den Berg’s loan move to North End, remaining in close contact with Preston throughout.

With Ward now taking a bigger role at Liverpool, maybe we can see more loan signing arriving from the Reds in the future, with Ward’s influence hopefully a boost for Preston.
