Preston fans had mixed views on Richard Chaplow in his time at North End, but he is now enjoying great success as a manager.
Chaplow joined Preston in a seven-figure move back in January 2008, arriving from West Bromwich Albion.
Having previously been a great prospect at Burnley, many fans were excited about Chaplow’s arrival.
The midfielder would spend two-and-a-half years at Preston, bagging eight goals in 75 appearances before being ditched by Darren Ferguson.
Now 36, Chaplow is out in America having ended his playing career with Orange County SC.
After a couple of years with the California-based club, Chaplow became assistant manager.
Back in August, Orange County SC sacked manager Brayden Cloutier. Chaplow was given the reins on an interim basis and hasn’t looked back.
In 14 games in charge, Chaplow has now won nine, drawn two and lost just three.
Sunday’s 1-0 win over Colorado Springs Switchbacks has now clinched the job on a permanent basis for Chaplow.
Orange County are currently in the USL, the second tier of football in the US, but with no promotion.
After finishing second in the Pacific Division, Orange County have now advanced into the Conference Semi-finals.
A win over Oakland Roots would set up a Conference Final with San Antonio FC or Rio Grande Valley FC Toros, with the Championship Final to follow.
Few expected Orange County to get to this stage, but Chaplow has turned their season around and put them in contention for silverware – not bad for a rookie coach.
